Capitals - Sabres Highlights 12/29/2013 (Video)

ICYM the Washington Capitals/Buffalo Sabres game last night, here are the highlights. Buffalo G Ryan Miller played excellent and stymied the Caps although the Caps are at fault for that.

In the years I have watched Miller, you need to get 1) bodies in front of him and 2) move the puck side to side to keep him moving. The Caps didn't do a good job at either last night except for Troy Brower's goal and we lost in an exciting shootout. Philipp Grubauer started again for the Caps and was a stud in goal again.

Philipp Grubauer to Start Tonight #CapsDucks

As HOT as Grubsy has been lately, this makes perfect sense.

Via WaPo's Capitals Insider
Philipp Grubauer will make his fifth start of the season tonight and face the red-hot Ducks, who arrive in Washington having won eight straight. Tough matchups and environments haven’t fazed Grubauer yet in this nearly month-long stint with the Capitals, so it will be interesting to see how he fares against an aggressive team like Anaheim with several talented power forwards.

“He played good against Carolina and he’s been hot so just going to ride him,” Oates said.

Bruce Boudreau Helped Put Hockey 'Front and Center' in Washington, DC

Interesting post over at Pro Hockey Talk on Ducks Coach Boudreau. If you haven't read Katie Carrera's profile on the Caps former Coach, check it out at this link.

Via PHT
Brooks Laich remembers the days when a ticket to a Washington Capitals game wasn’t exactly a hot commodity. The 30-year-old first donned a Caps uniform in 2003-04, before Alex Ovechkin was drafted and when average attendance was just 14,720 to watch a team that finished with a dreadful 23-46-10-3 record.

But Laich doesn’t just credit Ovechkin with hockey’s turnaround in DC. He also credits current Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau, who returns to the Verizon Center tonight for the first time since being fired by the Caps in late 2011.

“He turned hockey from a back-burner sport into a front-and-center, front page, exciting, real entertaining game,” Laich said, per CSN Washington. “Certainly, the players and organization have had a role in that, too, but he was one of the leading forces to putting hockey on the map in Washington.”

Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom Are Wearing New, Lighter Gear

Has it helped propel Ovie and Nick to perform at the level they're playing this year?

Via ESPN
If Patrick Kane seems quicker and slicker on the ice than usual, the reason might be more than the Chicago star's raw talent.

Kane, second in the NHL with 46 points, is of six top NHL players -- all likely Olympians -- transitioning into Bauer Hockey's futuristic OD1N skates and protective equipment.

Unveiled Thursday in Chicago, the OD1N gear shaves pounds from the bulky head-to-toe ensemble hockey players wear and, according to Bauer, improves mobility, speed and performance.

Bauer claims the equipment, which includes skates, a form-fitting body suit and pads, and goalie leg pads, also improves protection through the use of new materials and by staying in place better. Chicago's Jonathan Toews, Washington's Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom and Philadelphia's Claude Giroux are other NHL skaters switching to the customized gear. The New York Rangers' Henrik Lundqvist has been wearing OD1N goalie pads.

"The (design) team set out to completely reinvent speed, to completely reinvent performance, to completely reinvent the safety of the game," Bauer President and CEO Kevin Davis said. "It's game-changing technology."

Alex Ovechkin - NHL's 1st Star For Week of Dec 9 - Dec 15, 2013

With six overall points including 2 PPG and a four goal game during the week, I can see why.

Via Caps Today
ARLINGTON, VA. – Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has been named the NHL’s “First Star” for the week ending Dec. 15, the NHL announced today.

Ovechkin led the NHL with five goals and tied for third with six points as the Capitals (18-12-3, 39 points) earned five out of a possible six points to maintain second place in the Metropolitan Division. Ovechkin began the week by recording his third career four-goal game (and 13th career hat trick), including the tying marker with 32.4 seconds remaining in regulation, in a 6-5 shootout victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Dec. 10.

Ovechkin registered a goal and an assist, including the tying goal with 47.9 seconds left in the third period, in Washington’s 5-4 shootout win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Dec. 15, the Capitals’ second three-goal comeback of the week. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Ovechkin has seven game-tying goals in the final minute of regulation during his NHL career; no other player has scored more than four such goals since he entered the NHL in October 2005. The 28-year-old Moscow native passed Mike Gartner (397) for second place on Washington’s franchise goals list on Dec. 15 against Philadelphia.

Let's Hope Philly Keeps it Clean For #CapsFlyers Matinee (Video)

I still can't believe Ray Emery wasn't suspended for his instigating a fight between he and Braden Holtby during the last time these two teams met (a.k.a. the brawl).

Via Puck Daddy
As hockey fans, we shouldn’t be cool with what Ray Emery did to Braden Holtby on Friday night, and in seeing the backlash to that assault, we aren’t. As a pro-fighting guy, I’m not cool with what Ray Emery did, because as much as some writers on this site belittle “The Code”, at the very least it mandates that fights should be between two willing participants and, typically, with understandable cause.

“RAY EMERY MAD, RAY EMERY SMASH” doesn't rise to that validation, obviously, which is why what happened to Holtby is something only the bastion of the rink has prevented Emery from facing criminal charges.

Holtby's not the first player to get jumped and be an unwilling participant in a fight. But Holtby didn't deliver a questionable hit. This wasn't about retribution. This was about Ray Emery attacking a guy because he figured that's what the locals wanted to see and because he's terrible without the Blackhawks' security blanket.

The most twisted aspect of this – besides the Flyers joining the Sabres as the only teams in the League that believe their draft lottery odds increase with punches landed, apparently – is that the NHL was powerless to prevent it or retroactively punish Emery for it.

MIchal Neuvirth in Hershey on a Conditiong Stint

Can't wait until we get this multiple Calder Cup winning goalie back with the main squad.

Via AP
ARLINGTON, Va. -- Backup goalie Michal Neuvirth is being loaned by the Washington Capitals to their AHL affiliate in Hershey for a conditioning program after missing time with a lower-body injury.

The Capitals announced the move Thursday.

Neuvirth hasn't played for the Capitals since Nov. 22. A week later, he missed a scheduled start after hurting himself when he stepped on a puck during warmups.

In seven games with Washington this season, Neuvirth is 2-3-1 with a 2.83 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage.

In 128 career NHL games, all with the Capitals, he is 57-38-12 with seven shutouts, a 2.67 GAA and a .910 save percentage.

Adam Oates on Why Tom Wilson Won't Represent Canada in World Juniors

Coach Oates says Tom Wilson has 'conquered' juniors and won't benefit. But, wouldn't a tournament like this help Tom's NHL game? Apparently Wilson agrees it won't.

Via PHT
Tom Wilson rarely plays more than 10 minutes in a single Washington Capitals game, but according to head coach Adam Oates, the big 19-year-old forward has nothing to gain from representing Canada at the upcoming World Juniors.

“For me, Willie’s an NHL player,” Oates said. “He’s conquered junior. Nothing against that tournament at all, [but] I think he’s moved past it.”

Wilson, not surprisingly, echoed his coach’s thoughts.

“It’s obviously a dream to play for your country but my priority is here in Washington,” Wilson said. “I think [the Capitals] had in mind what they wanted. I’m not really going to dwell on it.

“I’m wishing those guys the best and it’s going to be a great tournament, but I’m happy to be here.”
